Red is the new Blue

St. Mary's Island, GA
Crooked River State Park

Since our kayak has not turned up (no surprise there) and we could not find a similar replacement, we found a dealer on the way to our next stop in Georgia that actually had ONE in stock that was a new model of what we had.  Different name, different color, but we're just happy to be able to get back on the water.  Especially since there are some great river trips coming up in Florida.

Crossing over the bridge will bring us to St. Mary's Island, GA, not far from the Florida border.

Campsite #14.  Nice water view.
There are a few hikes in the park and Hurley and I did them all.  There were some cool things to see, but mostly it was a wall of palmetto's and pines and not much else.  No wildlife, barely even a bird.  I was hoping to see some armadillos, tortoises, hogs or owls.

There was what was left of a large tree stump that was
interesting in it's shape.

There was a section on one of the trails where there were a bunch of large vines that just went from the trees, to the ground and back up another tree.  It was hard to tell where they started and where they ended.

Walking towards the river, there was this wall of roots or vines, not sure, but it looked cool.

Goodbye Georgia, Hello Florida!

  1. Happy that you were able to get another kayak but so sad it happened. Have fun in Florida.

  2. Hope you like your new kayak as well as the old one! Love the root picture! We will be heading to Florida in three weeks but the motorhome will stay here at Lake Mead.

    1. Thanks Joan. We'll be in FL until Jan 3. Perhaps we'll cross? We're looking forward to some time at Lake Mead next Spring.

  3. Love the Spanish moss in the last shot. It is neat stuff in its own way.

    1. It is pretty Merikay. But I had a hard time getting it to really show up in the pictures.

  4. Always nice to find a quick replacement - takes a little of the sting out of the loss. Do you sometimes see critters when out with Hurley? Tessa will be hiking with us most of the time, so I've wondered if her presence might keep us from seeing as much wildlife.
It's so cool that you are "all the way over there" - seems like you were just heading out :-)

    1. I was panicking a little bit because we couldn't find a used one and we have lots of kayaking planned in FL. So we bit the bullet and bought another new one. Just like our other one. Yes we see lots with Hurley. I just have to be very vigilant because he either wants to play with it or chase it, so I watch what he's watching and hang on. He's a terrible healer. He's quiet though and not a barker. Yes, it does seem strange to be here in FL in December. Miss the family but we are having a great time. Future years should keep us closer for the holidays. Looking forward to meeting up with you once you're on the road in your new rig!! Just think how quick it's coming?!

  5. Did you guys get a lock? We have bike cables on ours. What can I say? I grew up in Detroit!

    1. Yes, we'll be locking it. Even when it's on top of the truck. Steve wants to use a kryptonite braided cable. Even so, if some loser wants it bad enough...

  6. Ron uses a kryptonite lock on the engine hood of the '64 when it's parked. The outside may not be 100%, but the motor is... Glad your new kayak fit in the same holder.

  7. Good idea on the trunk. I don't think I would've thought about protecting the engine. It's the exact same kayak, just a few years newer model.

  8. Just catching up on blogs since we finally have reliable internet - we went with cable internet while in Gold Canyon. Anyway, what a great tour of the area in GA. You're certainly getting to know the State Parks around the country. I thought AZ was beautiful - but you're in some gorgeous landscape. Looking forward to seeing these places ourselves. Thanks

  9. Ya, it can be frustrating when the internet isn't reliable. We're enjoying all the different areas. The hikes you're doing look great. I've always wanted to do more hiking in AZ. Although I've always been a little afraid of coming across Killer Bees. You might remember I have a bee thing :-( I've heard they like to stay in cool places, so be careful around mine openings.

  10. Glad to,hear you got your kayak. I always say "in 5 years I won't remember the money but I will have the memories". Are you at Crooked River? It is a good paddle if you watch the tides. Hope you get to visit Cumberland Island Nat'l Seashore. Get to Okeefenokee if you can. Lots of fun, great paddling!!

  11. Thanks Sherry. Still bummed about our blue kayak being stolen, but happy to be back on the water! I've been re-reading your posts of the springs for little gems and heads ups! Steve wasn't feeling well while we were at Crooked River so we didn't get to paddle. (those currents looked a little scary too). We leave Suwanee today and go to Rainbow Springs. Looking forward to the clear water!

  12. Debbie and Steve,
Can you give me some info on your kayak rack for your truck? It looks pretty slick.
    Thanks,

    Mike

    1. Mike,
Our rack was made by Rack-It. www.rackitinc.com They custom made it for us so that it would be long enough and strong enough to hold our kayak, but not hit the 5th wheel. It's great. The owners are great and will work with you to build exactly what you want They provide truck racks to distributors, but will custom build one for you. They were especially wonderful to work with because they knew we were heading out fulltime and needed the rack built very quickly They did it in almost no time, exactly how we wanted it!

  13. I bet it is good to be back on the water! I took delivery of a new Sea Eagle yesterday and cannot wait to try it out. How long are you guys going to be in Florida?
